SPIKE
GETTING THE STUD TOY POODLE “SPIKE” USED TO THE SLEEPER. :
Getting a stud toy poodle like Spike used to using a sleeper can take patience, perseverance and a positive approach. Here are some useful tips to facilitate this process:
Suggestions for “sleeper” usage :
1. Choice of sleeper : Be sure to choose a sleeper that fits the size of our poodle. It must be large enough for him to turn and stretch comfortably.
2. Placement of the sleeper : Place the sleeper in a quiet and accessible place in the house, away from its sleeping area and meals. This helped Spike associate the sleeper with a space sufficiently separated from food and rest.
3. Using positive reinforcement : We rewarded and praised Spike every time he used the sleeper correctly. Positive reinforcement will encourage him to repeat the desired behavior.
4. Patience and perseverance : It is normal that it took Spike a long time to get used to using the sleeper. Be patient and consistent in your approach, avoiding punishing him if he makes mistakes.
5. Routine : Establish a routine for Spike, encouraging him to use the sleeper after meals, before bed and immediately after waking up.
6. Supervision : Until the poodle has completely mastered the use of the sleeper, supervise him closely and intercept any attempts to use other areas of the house such as bathroom.
7. Cleaning : Initially we kept the sleeper “dirty” so that Spike would always remember what it was for …. once we confidently understood the role of the sleeper and then encouraged him to use it, then we proceeded to clean or change it whenever it was dirty.
8. Reduction of stimuli : We minimized stimuli that might make Spike feel the need to urinate or defecate during the night, such as access to food or water just before bedtime.
With patience, consistency and a positive approach, Spike, our very intelligent fawn toy poodle gradually learned to use the sleeper for his needs. Remember to congratulate yourself for every small success along the way and be patient during any difficulties .
