How we educated and trained our miniature white poodle named Zircon

When Zircon, a wonderful miniature white poodle, arrived at our kennel, he was a sweet and curious little ball of white fur. From the very first moment, we knew that education and training would be crucial to help him grow up calm and happy. Fortunately, the poodle is one of the most intelligent breeds in existence: they understand quickly, are eager to learn, and love to please their family. With Zircon, the job was surprisingly simple and also a lot of fun!

Socialization of the miniature white poodle ZIRCON

The very first thing we focused on was socialization. Zircon had to learn about the world: other dogs, people, children, different noises, new environments. In the first months of life, every experience is crucial in forming a puppy’s character. So, with a lot of patience and a lot of joy, we took him to meet other dogs at the park, friends who came to visit us at home, or even just people we met while walking.

At first the miniature white poodle Zircon was a bit shy, but just encouraging him with a soft voice, a few strokes and maybe a yummy treat was enough to make him feel safe. He soon realized that meeting other dogs and people meant getting cuddles and cookies, so he became more and more open and happy to interact with everyone. Watching him run around greeting new friends, wagging his tail, was immensely satisfying!

Walks with our new miniature white poodle

Parallel to socialization, we began to accustom him to the leash. At first, like all toy poodle puppies, Zircon would try to bite him or sit on the floor, as if to say, “Now what?” We never forced things: everything was based on positive reinforcement and small steps. First we let him sniff and get acquainted with the leash in the house, then we tried walking a few meters, rewarding him every time he followed us. In a very few days, thanks to his intelligence, Zircon understood that walking near us was fun and made him feel part of the group.

After a while, walking on a leash became one of his favorite times. He walked proudly, with his little straight tail and high little face! And we, of course, were so proud of him.

The use of the sleeper

Another important step was teaching him to use the sleeper. Since he was initially too small to go outside regularly for his needs, we chose to get him used to the sleeper in the house. Again, patience and perseverance were key. Whenever he did his dumps in the right place, he received an avalanche of praise and a few rewards. On the other hand, if he made a mistake, no harsh reprimands: we simply cleaned up without giving him attention, so as not to reinforce the mistake.

Thanks to his very fast learning ability, in no time our miniature white poodle Zircon understood that going on the sleeper was what we wanted from him. It was amazing to see how quickly he connected the correct behavior to the reward. After a few weeks, he almost wasn’t wrong anymore!

Another thing that made it easier was just the nature of the breed. The miniature white poodle is an exceptionally intelligent dog: he learns commands in a few repetitions, is curious, and really wants to please his humans. Zircon, our miniature white poodle, listened intently, sought our gaze to understand what we expected of him, and worked hard to keep us happy. It was never necessary to raise his voice or punish him: just guide him gently, and he would respond immediately.

In addition to “big goals” such as socialization, leash and sleeper, we also worked on small commands such as “sit,” “stay,” “come,” and “leave.” Here again, his intelligence amazed us. In just a few days, Zircon had already learned the meaning of many words and had a lot of fun during training sessions, which were real games for him.

Today Zircon is a cheerful, polite and sociable miniature white poodle. He loves being with us, running around the park, meeting new friends and cuddling on the couch. Educating Zircon has been a wonderful experience of love, patience and complicity.
