THE COAT COLOR GENETICS OF THE BROWN POODLE “YURSI” :

The brown color of  Yursi  has a definite genetic basis.

Brown is one of the rarest colors in poodles, and is determined by a combination of genes responsible for pigment production in the dog’s coat. In particular, brown in poodles is often associated with the “b” gene, which is responsible for the production of eumelanin, the dark pigment that gives hair color. When a poodle receives one copy of the “b” gene from each parent, the result is a brown or chocolate coat. However, the genetics of coat color is complex and is influenced by other genes that act together with the “b” gene such as the “K” locus or the “A” locus, still other genes may influence brown color intensity, spot distribution or dilution.

In Yursi’s specific case, her brown coat was the result of a mating between parents who both carried the “b” gene for brown color. This means that Yursi inherited one copy of the “b” gene from each parent, making the brown color of his coat a dominant characteristic in his lineage. It is important to note that coat color genetics can vary greatly among poodles: there are many other colors in this breed, including black, white, gray, and fawn, which may be present in the toy poodle population.

Ultimately, Yursi’s brown color is the result of a complex genetic combination designed by the ‘breeder to select this beautiful brown poodle mom.
